Stillness Practices

Jaw Release Drop

Somatic / Body-Centered

A hyper-focused relaxation exercise aimed at the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which is the primary zone where humans unconsciously store daily stress and tension.

Instructions

  1. Part your teeth: Slightly open your mouth so your upper and lower teeth are not touching.

  2. Unhook the joint: Intentionally let your lower jaw drop down completely heavy, as if it's unhinged.

  3. Relax your tongue: Let your tongue flatten out and rest softly against the bottom of your mouth.

  4. Soften your lips: Keep your lips parted slightly, breathing gently through both your nose and mouth.

  5. Massage the hinges: Gently rub the soft hinges right below your ears with your fingertips for 10 seconds.

  6. Enjoy the softness: Sit in that completely slack-jawed, tension-free physical state for 1 minute.
